The Ataribox Looks Slick But What the Heck Does it Do

first_imgRight after this year’s E3 had finished, Atari announced it would be releasing a new console. This reveal was accompanied by a brief video showing bits and pieces of the upcoming system. Today, the legendary gaming company has released official images of this Ataribox. Images, but not much else. There are two variations of the Ataribox. One features a wood front, while the other has black glass. Both have ribbed black plastic, which is reminiscent of old Atari systems. There are also a number of ports on the back of the machine. Aesthetically speaking, this is a great redesign of a classic system.AdChoices广告This is what an email sent to Ataribox list subscribers says: “As you can guess, those ports suggest modern internal specs. It also means that while we will be delivering classic gaming content, we will also be delivering current gaming content.”That part of the email is admittedly a bit vague, so let’s try to break it down. Since there is no cartridge slot on the system, we have to assume it plays “classic gaming content” by way of emulation. Think of the NES Classic Edition. Then there’s the part about “current gaming content.” What is that supposed to mean? Does Atari plan on releasing brand-new games for this system? That is what the email seems to suggest.Atari goes on to say: “We know you are hungry for more details; on specs, games, features, pricing, timing etc. We’re not teasing you intentionally; we want to get this right, so we’ve opted to share things step by step as we bring Ataribox to life, and to listen closely to Atari community feedback as we do so.”Right now, this seems to be Atari’s answer to the NES Classic Edition. But if it can also run newer games, that would help it from being another “me too” system. Stay tuned for more news on the Ataribox as it develops.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.last_img
