New TV/Web service arrives

first_imgMONTEBELLO – Some consumers in the city now have a third choice, along with satellite and cable, for subscription pay television. Earlier this month, AT&T, the telephone company giant, launched U-verse, a new television and high-speed Internet service folded into one package. “We were looking to roll out this new system in communities that had a customer base with a desire for choice in their TV and broadband services,” said Kieran Nolan, At&T vice president and general manager for the Los Angeles area. “And Montebello was on the top of the list.” Currently, residents near the Montebello Country Club and Golf Course, 901 Via San Clemente, have access to the service. “It’s one of the first television services integrating the TV experience with the Internet experience,” he said. AT&T was granted a statewide franchise earlier this year in accordance with new state legislation regarding video service, said AT&T spokesperson Gordon Diamond. “It basically allowed us to have the same agreement the city has with its current cable provider without having to negotiate with the city,” he said. The city’s franchise tax agreement with Charter Communications states that the company pays 5 percent of its sales base, said Michael Tam, city controller. “We receive approximately $300,000 from Charter annually,” he said. “But we don’t expect to get that much from AT&T.” The new system, under the agreement, must also provide public education programing, Diamond said. For more information, or to check if U-verse is available in your area, call 1 (800) ATT-2020 or log on to www.uverse.att.com. Other cities that have also launched U-verse include Anaheim, Burbank, Glendale, Fullerton, Laguna Niguel, Riverside, Tustin, Santa Clarita, Garden Grove and Altadena. “We are definitely going to expand within Montebello,” said Nolan, stressing this is not a test market. “Montebello is a very important marketplace.” U-verse TV customers have a selection of five programming packages and premium packages, all complete with High Definition channels and digital video recording (DVR). The pricing for these packages ranges from $44 to $129, which includes one DVR box and three regular boxes. Some of the other features of U-verse include a large selection of television programming such as premium, Spanish-language, religious and ethnic networks; a video-on-demand library; fast channel changing; picture-in-picture channel surfing; and a program search that allows viewers to search by title or actors’ names. The initial response to U-verse has been “quite favorable,” Nolan said, pointing out that people are looking for more. last_img read more
