Chameleon Tongue Beats Jet Aircraft

first_imgDid you know a chameleon’s tongue is so fast as it shoots out toward its prey, it reaches 50 G’s – five times faster than a fighter jet can accelerate?  Science Now describes how the chameleon does it.  Scientists only recently found out the secret with high-speed photography and careful examination of the tongue structure, done by Jurriaan de Groot of Leiden University and Johan van Leeuwen (Wageningen University, the Netherlands).  They had to shoot at 500 frames a second to see the action.    The tongue has an accelerator muscle, which by itself is not strong enough to achieve the high speed.  The tongue is bound, though, to 10 newly-discovered sheaths, tied to the tongue bone, that literally catapult the tongue outwards.  These sheaths contain a spirally-wound protein that store energy “like a stretched rubber band.”  As the tongue accelerates, the sheaths release their energy, then telescope outward to allow the tongue to reach its maximum extent – twice the chameleon’s body length.  Facing a predator so armed, the fastest fly doesn’t stand a chance. No series of gradual transitional forms was suggested in the article.  And forget it; there’s no way this creature could have evolved from a fast-talking salesman.(Visited 20 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

Report: ESPN To Buy Second Half Of Big Ten’s Media Rights For $190 Million Per Year

first_imgBig Ten logo.Twitter/@bigtenAfter FOX agreed to buy up half of the Big Ten’s available media rights for a reported $240 million per year, many speculated that a Big Ten/ESPN divorce could be on the horizon. FOX’s move does mean big changes for the conference, but ESPN will still have a major Big Ten presence. According to a report by Sports Business Daily, ESPN is set to buy the other half of the Big Ten’s package for $190 million per year over the next six years.ESPN will buy the second half of the Big Ten’s media rights package, ending months of speculation that the two were about to sever their 50-year relationship.ESPN will pay an average of $190 million per year over six years for essentially half the conference’s media rights package, according to several sources close to the talks. Two months ago, Fox Sports agreed to take the other half of the package for an average of $240 million per year. CBS Sports also has told the conference that it will renew its basketball-only package for $10 million per year.FOX will air the Big Ten Championship Game, and gets first choice for games, meaning that college football fans will be flipping to the network, and not ESPN, to watch Michigan vs. Ohio State in the future.FOX gets a game selection advantage over ESPN in that reported deal. So Michigan-Ohio State is probably moving to FOX for a while.— Nick Baumgardner (@nickbaumgardner) June 20, 2016With the combination of FOX and ESPN’s deals, the Big Ten is set to pull in $2.64 billion for its media package. On the field, you can have a very healthy debate over which conference reigns supreme, but in the bank accounts, it is hard to argue against what the Big Ten has pulled off this off-season.[Sports Business Daily]MORE FROM COLLEGE SPUN:The 10 Most Aggressive Fan Bases In CFBIn Photos: Golfer Paige SpiranacESPN Makes Decision On Dick Vitalelast_img read more

Focus on Children With Special Needs in May

first_imgStory Highlights Speaking at the launch, held on April 17 at the GraceKennedy Harbour Street office, downtown Kingston, Chairman of the National Child Month Committee (NCMC), Dr. Pauline Mullings, said this year’s theme is applicable for all children; however, emphasis will be placed on children with special needs.   Jamaica will observe Child Month 2019 in May, under the theme ‘Encourage, Enable, Include Me’.                         Speaking at the launch, held on April 17 at the GraceKennedy Harbour Street office, downtown Kingston, Chairman of the National Child Month Committee (NCMC), Dr. Pauline Mullings, said this year’s theme is applicable for all children; however, emphasis will be placed on children with special needs. She noted that a United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) fact sheet states that children with disabilities are one of the most marginalised and excluded groups of children, experiencing widespread violation of their rights.“Too often, children with disabilities are defined and judged by what they lack, rather than what they have. Their exclusion and invisibility serves to render them uniquely vulnerable, denying them respect for their dignity, their individuality, even their right to life itself,” the document adds.Several activities will be undertaken by the NCMC along with several of its partners and sponsors.  Highlights of the month will include the National Church Service, which will be held on Saturday, May 4, at the Kencot Seventh-day Adventist Church, 10-12 Osbourne Road, starting at 11:00 a.m. Churches across the island are being encouraged to host services focusing on children during the month of May. On Friday, May 17, National Children’s Day will be observed. On the day, adults are asked to take time out to recognise and appreciate the children, while paying special attention to those with special needs.  Persons are also asked to wear sunshine yellow in observance of the day.On Wednesday, May 29, a Day of Prayer will be held at the Maranatha Gospel Hall, 7 Deanery Road, in Kingston.  Jamaicans are being encouraged to join the NCMC in praying for the nation’s children.Dr. Mullings said that throughout the month, the NCMC will partner with several agencies to host other events focusing on children.Sponsors for Child Month 2019 are GraceKennedy Limited, the National Baking Company Foundation, Jamaica Producers, Jamaica Broilers Group of Companies, and the Sagicor Foundation. Ohio State mens hockey wins home finale against No 15 Golden Gophers

Sophomore goalie Christian Frey skates near his goal during a game against Minnesota at the Schottenstein Center on March 6. OSU lost, 4-2. Credit: Alexis Soares / Lantern photographerIn the final home game of their collegiate careers, OSU’s eight seniors were the stars on the ice one last time. The senior class helped lead the team to a 5-2 victory over the No. 15 Golden Gophers on Saturday.“Led by our seniors, no question,” coach Steve Rohlik said. “We talked a lot about it today and in video session, you can’t script a book any better than what happened tonight, but again, you’re led by eight pretty quality young men. But I credit the team because it takes all 27 guys to get it done, and all 27 guys jumped on board and everybody wanted to do it for the seniors, but more importantly for the program.”Sophomore forward Nick Schilkey’s backhander off a rebound from senior forward Darik Angeli put the Buckeyes in a 1-0 lead. The Gophers notched two tallies in the second period, but senior forward Matt Johnson tied the score at 2-2. OSU then added three goals in the third to take the win. This weekend proved to be a big one for junior defenseman Craig Dalrymple as he scored his first two goals of the season in back-to-back nights against the Gophers.“Two goals in two games, it’s pretty special,” Dalrymple said.OSU’s defense held the game for the Buckeyes by not allowing one of the best power-play units in college hockey to score on its four power-play chances.“That’s a scary team on the power play when you’re clicking at the right percent. They have so many weapons,” Rohlik said. “I think our guys decided it just doesn’t matter, you have to go out and kill a penalty and our guys just jumped the boards and got the job done.”After Minnesota coach Don Lucia decided to pull his goalie late in the final period Saturday to allow the Gophers to add an extra attacker, the Buckeyes took advantage.Led by the stick skills of senior forward Tanner Fritz, the Buckeyes scored twice on an empty net. Fritz assisted junior forward Anthony Greco on the first, and scored the second himself, marking his last home goal as a Buckeye.“I think the hockey gods were shining down on me a little, but definitely nice to go out that way,” Fritz said.Fritz, who leads the Buckeyes with 26 points and has had a point in each of his last six games, said this win was one to remember.“It’s an awesome feeling, something that I’ll remember and cherish down the road. I can look back on this and be proud of what I’ve done,” Fritz said. But the Buckeye captain’s hockey career isn’t over yet, as OSU is set to travel to Madison, Wis., to take on the Wisconsin Badgers in its final series of the regular season.“We enjoy this win. We played a very good hockey team,” Rohlik said. “We are going into their senior weekend and we have to become a better team starting on Monday and that’s our focus. If we can continue to do that, hopefully we can cause some success.”Puck drop in Madison is set for 8 p.m. on Friday and 7 p.m. on Saturday. read more

Review Roma – Juventus

first_imgAllegri’s defensive tactics worked yet again in Juventus’ 0-0 draw in Rome. Radja Nainggolan’s red card destroyed Roma’s chances of grabbing what would’ve been a deserved victory.Roma’s last match was a 1-0 away victory at Cagliari. It was a game that followed Roma’s CL semi-final exit, so Di Francesco fielded a mixed team. Against Juve, though, he didn’t have that luxury. Today’s lineup was: Alisson Becker on goal, Florenzi, Fazio, Jesus and Kolarov in the defense, Pellegrini, De Rossi and Radja Nainggolan in midfield, Under, Dzeko and El Shaarawy in attack. Juventus had to deal with AC Milan in the Italian cup final, something it did in impressive fashion, recording a convincing 4-0 win. Six players were missing in Allegri’s lineup from that encounter: Buffon, Asamoah, Benatia, Cuadrado, Khedira and Douglas Costa. They were replaced by Szczesny, Alex Sandro, Rugani, De Sciglio, Bernardeschi and Higuain. Barzagli, Matuidi, Pjanic, Dybala and Mandzukic rounded up the starting eleven.Roma missed a good opportunity in the 8th minute. Pellegrini cut out a pass in Juve’s half, opening up a 2-on-1 situation with Edin Dzeko. His pass to the Bosnian was a bit behind, forcing him to have to adjust and shoot with his weaker left foot. The shot went wide. In a similar situation a few moments later, Nainggolan stole the ball from Pjanic and headed towards Juve’s box. He chose to shoot instead of passing it to Dzeko and his attempt went high over the bar. 25 minutes in, Roma was clearly the better team. Juventus’ players were happy to sit back and wait for the hosts to break their defensive formation down. Definitely not something you would expect from a champion.Tagliavento awarded the first yellow card of the game to the former Roma midfielder Miralem Pjanic. Add a couple of lost balls that led to Roma counter attacks and you have an idea of what kind of performance we were seeing from the usually dependable Bosnian. Juve needed a point to secure the Scudetto and it was playing like it. At the break, it was Roma 0 – Juventus 0.25 minutes had passed in the second half and the most interesting moments were a Dybala disallowed goal and a Kolarov long-range effort that was blocked. The first substitution of the contest was made in the 67th minute, when Fernando Bernardeschi was replaced by Douglas Costa. Then, Radja Nainggolan, who had received a booking a few minutes earlier for pulling on Alex Sandro’s shirt, made a clumsy foul from behind on Dybala. The referee had no other choice but to show him a second yellow. In the 73rd minute, Gonalons substituted Pellegrini.Nainggolan’s red card changed the complexity of the game, as Juventus spent more time in Roma’s half than it did during the entirety of time prior to the send off. However, Allegri’s squad showed no desire to do more than simply pass the ball around while waiting for the remaining minutes to tick away. Eventually, the final whistle came. The viewers’ suffering ended and Juventus’ title celebration began.last_img read more

But even then, a phone call would have been better and shown a bit of class.”“Tammy would have been my main man in the Premier League – surely that would have been better for him? I don’t understand it. Surely they would want him playing in the Premier League?”“I don’t think it was a question over the size of the loan fee – we would have paid it. I just the felt the way we played, he would have enjoyed it and had an impact.”“I missed out on a few players waiting for him too, which disappointed me. But that’s life.”last_img read more
