The Bridge for Peace: RaphaEl Medical Mission team has wrapped up yet another successful medical mission at the Linden Hospital Complex (LHC) in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).The team commenced services on April 7 and ended on April 14, with the aim of providing specialty surgical services, including Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) and gynaecology during the one-week trip. The team included three surgeons, an anaesthesiologist, two nurse anaesthetists, an internist, and approximately five nurses (operating room, recovery and clinic).Dr Kevin Braat, an ENT surgeon from South Hampton, New York, returned to the Hospital for his third visit to the Region in the past two years with the team. According to information from the medical team, Dr Braat conducted daily clinics at the medical institution where he performed a variety of surgical procedures at the LHC Theatre on both children and adults. The team has reported that hearing loss was the most common condition which Dr Braat encountered during the week, with some patients being assisted by simple ear cleaning while many others were found to be in need of the additional assistance of hearing aids. The Public Health Ministry recently partnered with Starkey Hearing Aid company to provide hearing aids in Guyana free of charge. Patients are encouraged to take advantage of this service by making an appointment with the LHC Audiology Department for testing and more information. According to Denroy Tudor, Coordinator at the International Desk at the Public Health Ministry, the Ministry is elated to have partnered once again with the Bridge for Peace: RaphaEl Medical Mission.“This Government has recognised the importance of the continuance of such initiatives for they assist in relieving some of the health ailments facing our Guyanese people…Their medical professionals have expertise within internal medicine; obstetrics/gynaecology (OB/GYN); pre-op and post-op services and ENT specialists,” he noted.Bridge for Peace: RaphaEl Medical Mission completed its first surgical mission trip at the LHC in October 2016.The team comprised four physicians and four nurses, specialising in the areas of Anaesthesia, ENT, Internal Medicine, and OB/GYN. The project received approval and licensing from the Health Ministry.
A Donegal pensioner has received a World War II medal 70 years following his service in the Local Defence Force (LDF). James Callan, from Convoy, was recognised for his service during a special ceremony at Finner Camp in Ballyshannon.Callan, 93, served in the LDF, which existed between 1939 to 1945, for the then Letterkenny Battalion. Photo: Neil LedwithFollowing the war, Mr Callan served in the disbanded Local Defence Force, which was set-up by Gardai during “The Emergency” across Ireland.“The Emergency” has been used metonymically in historical and cultural commentary to refer to the state during the war.It is understood that the discovery was made following enquiries to the Military Archives of Ireland in Dublin.Photo: Neil LedwithAll members of the Local Defence Force were honoured for the dedication during WWII, all except one – Mr Callan. However, that was rectified last week when James inspected a guard of honour at the ceremony last week.Donegal pensioner receives WWII medal 70 years after conflict was last modified: September 21st, 2019 by Shaun KeenanShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)
According to a tweet by Mark Glaser from PBS’s MediaShift, Google is in talks with the white-label Internet video provider Brightcove and wants to acquire the company for up to $700 million. Brightcove’s customers include a large variety of large enterprises such as the New York Times, Showtime, Universal Music, AMC, AOL, and the Weather Channel. If this rumors turns out to be true, this acquisition would easily turn Google into the dominant commercial Web video provider. While Brightcove started out as a consumer video service, the company’s half-hearted attempts at convincing consumers to host their videos on Brightcove.TV came to an end when Brightcove shut down that site in November 2007. Last November, Brightcove also shut down its free Brightcove Network, which featured content from roughly 40,000 publishing partners. This June, Brightcove’s CEO Jeremy Allaire told Sillicon Alley Insider that the company was now profitable and that he expected the company to see a 50% revenue growth in 2009.Is Google Buying Brightcove’s Tech or Its Customers? While Google could obviously offer the same kind of services Brightcove currently offers on its own YouTube platform, Brightcove has already locked in most of the customers that Google would also be competing for. Also, while YouTube was designed as a consumer platform (even as Google is slowly moving to featuring more commercial content on the site), Brightcove has set up a platform that gives enterprise customers the flexibility and metrics they need. In the end, though, if this rumor is true, Google is most likely more interested in Brightcove’s customer base than in its technology. We asked both Google and Brightcove for a comment about this rumor and will update the post when/if we hear from them.Update: as Dan Rayburn points out in the comments below and on his blog, Brightcove’s setup requires its customers to use third-party content-delivery networks like Limelight to stream their videos. If Google really acquires Brightcove, this could turn out to be a problem, as it would keep Google from being able to use YouTube’s (cheap) infrastructure. Signs that energy efficient construction is gaining a foothold in the Shenandoah ValleyIt is hard to tell exactly who is leading the way — the homebuyers, the builders, or publicity about green homes in general — but there’s evidence the energy efficient mind-set has taken root in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, where EarthCraft-certified homes are becoming more abundant and where homebuyers are abandoning the notion that energy efficient construction is only for the wealthy.A recent story in the Daily News Record, based in Harrisonburg, cites local builder Aaron Yoder’s interest in highlighting the level of efficiency that can be achieved with a tightly sealed shell, good insulation, and properly sealed ductwork – even if renewable energy systems, which he calls “green bling,” are not in place.Certified under the EarthCraft House Virginia builder program and the National Association of Home Builders’ Green Professional program, Yoder built a 2,400 sq. ft. spec house, in a subdivision called Wyndham Woods, that he says requires about 40% less energy to operate than a conventionally built home of comparable size.Yoder says he currently is using the spec house, which he completed last year and is priced at $399,000, as a demonstration tool for prospective clients (who can compare its features to a $369,000 listing nearby). The New Record story also points out that Central Valley Habitat for Humanity has been building EarthCraft homes in the region for three years, and recently began work on its seventh EarthCraft house in the area.Johann Zimmerman, construction manager for CVHH, told the paper that for two of those homes, achieving EarthCraft certification added about $3,000 each to their construction cost, and that the largest total utility bill at one of the homes this winter was $107.Benjamin Meredith, a local inspector for EarthCraft and Energy Star who certified Yoder’s spec home, noted that about 600 homes in the Valley that are now in some stage of construction or planning will receive EarthCraft certification.

Everton U23 coach Unsworth: EFL Trophy good for developmentby Paul Vegas22 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveEverton U23 coach David Unsworth was delighted with their EFL Trophy win over Burton Albion.Unsworth admits he’s a supporter for the competition and the potential introduction of B teams.Asked if the competition has worked for Everton, Unsworth told the Liverpool Echo: “Yeah, I think it has. It’s a competition we’ve been delighted to be in. For the first couple of years, there was almost a novelty for the players to play against first-team players.“You know me and you know I’m a big advocate of what happens everywhere around Europe with B-teams and for the purpose of developing young players quicker, it is brilliant the way they work throughout the leagues in Europe.”When we’ve had a sniff of playing first-team opponents, I’ve been all over it. Even in pre-season, it is something I feel very passionately about.“You’ve seen tonight, a very, very good mid-table League One club with an experienced manager, we’ve been the better team and won quite comfortably.”People slag off under-23s football, the Premier League do the best they can and it’s a league that has improved year after year and it’s not as bad as people make it out to be. You’ve seen that tonight.”Technically, we’ve looked the better team, we handled the ball brilliantly and the way we work proves it’s right, in terms of being like a first-team and working a lot on physicality and speed and tempo and limited touches because tonight we were just awesome.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say
Arizona State Bobby HurleyNew Arizona State head basketball coach Bobby Hurley is best known for his play as a point guard at Duke and later in the NBA. However, Hurley did play a little baseball growing up in Jersey City, N.J., and last night he had the opportunity to put some old skills to use. Hurley was a guest of the Arizona Diamondbacks and threw out the first pitch before the team’s game against the Chicago Cubs. Beforehand, he had a chance to meet some of the D-Backs players and coaching staff, and was even interviewed by Sun Devil quarterback Mike Bercovici, who was in attendance with teammate Jordan Simone. It didn’t seem to affect him much, as his throw was accurate.Calm, cool and collected. Nicely done, @BobbyHurley11. https://t.co/sMyggvY9Yh— #VoteDbacks (@Dbacks) May 24, 2015Looks like Hurley is still comfortable with the ball in his hands, even if it’s not a roundball.
